Lt Gen Shergill is known for his dynamic leadership in battle and counterinsurgency while in boardrooms, he has brought original thought leadership steering rapid growth while upholding corporate vision and values. He has been involved in two start ups – Fortis Healthcare Limited and the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies – both of which are now leaders in their respective fields.
Since Sept 2003, Lt Gen Shergill has been on the board of University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, the first domain specific University in Asia. By strengthening relations with Central and State Governments and the energy industry, he took the University to enviable heights and repute. During the tenure, he also has been responsible for planning the development of the ‘Energy Knowledge Village’.
Lt Gen Shergill has also been on the Board of SBL PVT. LTD., the largest Homeopathic manufacturer in India since Jun ’06. He has been responsible for business development, strategic advice and helping the company in its expansion from a 100cr company to a 450cr company. Lt Gen Shergill was part of the Board of Fortis Hospitals, the largest Healthcare group in India between Jun ’05 and Sep 13, where he steered the buyout of Super Religare Labs – an 800cr deal. He also helped Fortis in valuation and clinching of a $665 million merger. He joined SRL LIMITED, the largest Diagnostic Laboratory company in India in October 2013 where he represented the Boards on their Remuneration and Compensation Committee, Governance Committee and the Audit Committee as a Member. He was also a part of the Advisory Council of S. Durlabhji Charitable Hospital, the largest Charitable Hospital in Jaipur. He provided critical inputs for the expansion of the hospital by effectively managing the relationship with the Ministry of Health, Government of India.
Lt Gen Shergill has a distinguished Army and Civilian Sevice Track Record. He Commanded a Division in Jammu and Kashmir and a Corps in the North East, both in a counterinsurgency environment. He was also a Commandant in the Indian Military Academy. Earlier he served as a Defence Attache’ accredited to the Indian Embassy, Washington, DC, USA and the Indian High Commission, Ottawa, Canada. On retirement from the Army, he was appointed Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission.
Lt Gen Shergill is an accredited Coach and has shaped the careers and lives of several top academicians and Senior Executives. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the recipient of Presidents Gold Medal, Lt Gen Shergill completed a Master of Science degree from University of Madras, and also Master of Military Arts and Science from United States Command and General Staff College. Lt Gen Shergill has authored “Counterinsurgency Support to a Host Nation,” by Lancer’s Publications and regularly lectures on Leadership, Motivation, Energy, Terrorism and Insurgency. He also Represented India in Horse and Cycle Polo, and Defence Services in Golf.
